Humanities (Geography and History)

Geography

Geography at DILS will empower students with the knowledge to appreciate our rapidly changing environment both near and far from home.  A combination of traditional maps, fieldwork and digital tools are to always be at the heart of our geographical investigations.

Through studying geography our students will become global citizens of the 21st century and be able to visualise geography in all current affairs. Furthermore, our geography students will develop outstanding interpersonal skills which increases their employability for the future.

Why is Geography important?

Geography helps us to make sense of the world around us, better understand the places we live in, learn about and visit, why they matter and how they are connected to a globalised world.

Through geography, we encounter different societies and cultures and learn to appreciate the incredible diversity of landscapes and peoples.

In geography, we face questions of what it means to live sustainably in an interdependent world and learn to value and care for the planet and all its inhabitants.

How is Geography taught?

Geography is taught through a combination of subject knowledge, geographical skills, enquiry and fieldwork. Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom.

History

History at DILS will aim to create individuals who are curious and evidence driven thinkers. Our curriculum will develop knowledge of the modern world through study of the past by exploring the impact of political, social, technological and religious change with a specific focus on the history of Britain in its global context. Students will have the experience of being exploratory learners, encouraged to develop their own opinions through discovery and discussion about the past, and by studying and considering the arguments of others. We want our students to be confident, articulate and empathetic young people who will be valued citizens of the future.

Why is History important?

History is important because it helps pupils to understand and interpret the past, and therefore, the present.

Through history, pupils develop a deeper cross-cultural awareness and understanding of their own and others’ heritage, through looking at evidence and asking and answering questions.

In history, we can analyse successes and failures, which, in turn, teaches us to learn from our mistakes.

How is History taught?

History is taught through a combination of subject knowledge, historical skills, enquiry and fieldwork. Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom.
