School Houses
Every member of the Dunstable Icknield Lower School community, children and staff, as well as being in a class and a year group, belongs to a School House.
The Houses are:
- Einstein (green)
- Hawking (red)
- Dalai (blue)
- Nightingale (yellow)
Your child’s PE uniform includes a plain coloured round neck T-shirt in the colour of their house.
You will receive an email to notify you of your child’s School House.
House Competitions and Events
Throughout the year children have many chances to work with members of their House Group, taking part in competitions and events. In the summer term, the House Groups participate in a whole school Sports Day. Everyone is involved in representing their House Group, with a splash of bright colour; all children proudly wear their PE shirts which are in the house colours.
About Our Houses
Einstein (green) house is named after Albert Einstein, a theoretical physicist who was born in Germany in 1879. He grew to be one of the most famous and clever scientists ever to have lived. Even as a young boy, he showed he had a great mind for maths and physics. During his lifetime, Einstein came up with some amazing theories about light, matter, gravity, space and time and soon enjoyed worldwide fame!
Hawking (red) house is named after Stephen Hawking, who was born in Britain in 1942. He was a scientist - a cosmologist, or someone who studies the universe as a whole. He is known for his work on black holes. Hawking also wrote several best selling books. When Hawking was 21, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - a disease that weakens muscles and causes paralysis. Despite his diagnosis, he continued to work until his death in 2018.
Dalai (blue) house is named after the Dalai Lama, who is the leader of the main branch of the religion known as Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetan Buddhists believe that the Dalai Lama is the god of compassion who comes to Earth to help people. The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the 14th Dalai Lama. He was born to a peasant family in 1935. Before his 5th birthday he was named as the Dalai Lama.
Nightingale (yellow) house is named after Florence Nightingale, who was born in 1820. She was a nurse who saved the lives of many soldiers during the Crimean War (1845-56). She was dedicated to her profession and she worked hard day and night. She became known as the Lady with the Lamp as she carried a lamp to check on her patients throughout the night.
